THUNDER AND LIGHTNING

If you get caught out in a storm you should think about the following:

  • Avoid any high ground, you do not want to be the tallest thing in the area.
  • Be aware of metal objects like walking poles, ice axe put them down if save to do so.
  • Keep away from tall objects like trees, pylons or any tall feature or object avoid water.
  • Keep away from fence lines.
  • If you are in a group spread out, lightning can jump from one person to another.
  • Find the lowest bit of ground and sit on your backpack, make sure you bring your knees up to your chest.
  • Do not lie down.

TIPS ON FINDING DIRECTION WITHOUT A COMPASS OR MAP

For example in my part of the country West Scotland the prevailing wind comes from the West, so the trees tend to bend away from the prevailing wind, also the foliage will be thicker on the sheltered side. And the bark tends to be thinner on the Southern side of the tree, this is due to the sun.

Moss, fungus and lichen will grow on the Northern side of trees, walls and fences due to the moisture retention away from the sun.

DETERMING DIRECTIONS BY SHADOW

USING SHADOW TO FIND DIRECTION

compassg.jpg

HOW DO WE DO IT?

  1. Place a stick, branch or your walking pole upright in the ground, at a level spot where a distinctive shadow will be cast. Mark the shadow tip with a twig, stone or other means. This first shadow is always the West direction.
  2. Wait 10 to 20 minutes until the shadow tip moves a few inches. mark this position of the shadow tip the same way.
  3. Draw a straight line through the two marks to obtain an approximate East - West line.
  4. Stand with the first mark (West) to your left, the other directions are simple; North to your front, East is to the right and South is behind you.
