This web site is a reference document dealing with map reading and land navigation.

It only provides a general overview on the subjects of maps and map reading.

The most important consideration in map reading, land navigation is that it is not an end in itself. Any map is a means of communicating structured information to the map user and it remains for the map user to select and interpret the particular information required for the purpose in hand.

To become a competent map reader and land navigator is not beyond anyone's capabilities all it takes is practice and the effort by the individual.

Remember map reading is a skill and like all skills if not put into practice regularly, the skill is easily lost.

ORDNANCE SURVEY

We in the UK are quite fortunate because we have probarly the best cartographers around. Ordnance Survey is a Government department, and the word ordnance originates from the Army who produced the first maps in 1791. Ordnance Survey are constantly amending the map contents and information.

NATIONAL NAVIGATION AWARDS SCHEME (NNAS)

NNAS registered providers offer training in skill development, and assessment to participants. The scheme is not in itself a leadership qualification. It concerns personal performance, and is non competitive. The various levels of the scheme let everyone gain experience and demonstrate technical competence in navigation.

Stages in the Scheme

Are as follows:

Bronze Award

Silver Award

Gold Award

Normally participants begin with the Bronze award and progress through the Silver and Gold awards, with periods of further experience and consolidation between.
